Don’t help Maoists, warns minister

Posted by Indian Vanguard on September 17, 2007

KOLKATA — West Bengal government has ordered non-governmental organisations to steer clear of Maoists trying to capture power through an armed revolution.

Ashok Bhattacharya, Urban Debvelopment and Municipal Affairs Minister, said that Maoists were trying to infiltrate NGOs posing as social workers.

"We know that members of bodies like the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights and some welfare organisations are sympathetic to Naxalites", said Bhattacharya.

"We believe in freedom of thought and ideology as long as it does not propagate violence. So even if some NGOs are sympathetic to Maoists, they should not allow Maoists to make inroads into the NGOs posing as social workers."

He added that the administration will not hesitate to take action against NGOs if they knowingly shelter wanted Maoists.

He was speaking at a convention organised by the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Silguri to build public opinion against Maoists.
