KOLKATA, Sept. 4: A 32-year-old man, accused of being involved in a case of arson at Belpahari was arrested from his residence at Semampore in Hooghly yesterday.

A CID officer said that Subhankar Chakrabarty, the owner of a computer shop, is a close associate of the Maoist rebels who carried out a blast near Belpahari in Midnapore (West) early this year.

Five computers, two mobile phones and a few floppies were seized from his shop. The incident has triggered a strong protest from the local residents as well as the members of human rights groups.
Subhankar’s father, Mr Sailesh Chakrabarty said that the officers have neither shown an arrest warrant, nor did they give him a copy of the seizure list.

Mr Chakrabarty said that he would lodge a complaint with the state human rights commission against the CID.
Mr Kirity Roy, a senior member of Manabadhikar Suraksha Mancha (MASUM), alleged that Subhankar was involved in human rights movement in Hooghly.

Mr Roy sent a letter to the Governor of the state seeking his intervention into the alleged police highhandedness.
Mr Rajiv Kumar, the deputy inspector general (operations), CID said that “the youth was involved in destructive activities in the Maoist infested Belpahari. He would be produced before the Jhargram court.”
It can be recalled that another suspected CPI (Maoist) leader, Mr Sumit Sarkar, was arrested from Hindmotor in May this year, in connection with a case of arson in West Midnapore.

Prior to that incident, two senior CPI (Maoist) leaders Mr Patit Paban Haldar and Mr Sushil Roy were arrested from Uttarpara.
