Naxal violence on the rise

Posted by Indian Vanguard on August 26, 2007

Naxal violence is on the rise in Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa, though it seems to have been tamed to some extent in Chhattisgarh, which had earned the dubious distinction of being the worst-hit both in terms of incidents and casualties.

The latest data on violence in Naxal-affected states available with the Union Home Ministry shows that there has been a marginal increase in overall incidents of Naxal attacks across the country.

While 971 incidents involving Left-wing extremism were reported between January and July this year, the figure for the corresponding period last year was 967.

Bihar reported 87 incidents till July this year, up from 75 during the corresponding period last year. As many as 18 police personnel and 21 civilians were killed in the state during the period under review compared to five police personnel and 31 civilians in the previous year.

In Jharkhand, incidents are up from 191 till July 2006 to 259 during the same period this year. However, the number of casualties, both civilians and security personnel, has come down from 75 to 71.
