Now, Maoist trail leads to Kaithal-Chandigarh

Posted by Indian Vanguard on May 8, 2007

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana police arrested a Maoist leader, holding clandestine meetings in Kaithal to enlist more youths into the ranks, on Monday evening. The arrested man has been identified as Somveer Singh, who was earlier a leader of the Maoists’ students cell — Jagrook Chatra Sangathan.

Somveer’s is the second such arrest in the last two days and the fifth within a month. On Saturday, Yamunanagar police had arrested another Maoist leader, Poonam, while her husband Sanjay managed to give them a slip.

Sources said SHO, Kaithal city police station, Ravinder Kumar, was on patrol duty when he was tipped off about a Maoist activists’ meeting in Jawahar Park in Kaithal. In a swift action, ASI Pritam Singh led a team comprising Balraj Singh and Pritam Singh to the venue and arrested Somveer. However, others attending the meet fled from the spot, escaping police action.

SP Navdeep Singh Virk confirmed the arrest but declined to say anything more, saying probe is still in a preliminary stage. A case under sections 34 and 124A of IPC — furthering criminal cause with a singleminded intention and sedition respectively — has been registered against Somveer and others at the meeting.

“We have confiscated some documents pertaining to their (Maoists) funding. Our sources tell us that Maoists have been active in the state over the last one year or so and have been organising lectures and secret meetings in almost all the districts of the state,” KV Raumna, SP, Yamunanagar, told TOI.
